Open studio concept map

About The Project

Hello everyone!

I’m Lee, an educator who lives in Kasai City. I want to create a community studio, called, “The Open Studio”, where anyone can come and study various subjects, such as art, design, game design, fashion design, programming, and English to eliminate educational disparities.

As someone that grew up with difficulty, my saving grace was my access to art and technology courses at school and a computer my classmates fundraised to buy me when I got sick. Unfortunately, many of the schools in my area have ended their arts and tech extracurricular activities, leaving many students without anywhere to go to fuel their curiosity. Additionally, many households do not have internet and computers, while community culture and art centers were shuttered in exchange for retail store space to boost the local economy.

The Mission

With many in the countryside, especially young students, having little to no advanced computer literacy, they’re at a disadvantage when entering higher education and the workforce. Additionally, due to the lack of teachers in rural areas, many schools have limited club and after-school activities, most being limited to sports, leaving more art and technology-inclined students feeling frustrated. As a result, the studio will work on closing the digital divide by providing resources and access to computers to increase computer literacy and design thinking. ICT learning, asynchronous courses, and live workshops focusing on STEAM skills will be available for anyone who joins the studio.

The Place

I bought an old house in the neighborhood. The location is close to the train station and easily accessible to three major cities. But given it’s age, it needs updates to make it into a fully functional studio.

Art Lab

This room will consist of tools and supplies for the creation of two and three-dimensional art pieces where members can improve their art skills and artistic expression for a better understanding of illustration. This helps with preparing learners for art careers, such as illustrators and fine artists.

Startup Space & Co-working Lounge

This is a meeting room where members who are considering starting a business can gather and discuss ideas.
